上野公園内の一角、[[西郷隆盛]]像の近くにある。日本の美術団体としては最も古く、[[1879年]]（[[明治]]12年）に設立された[[公益財団法人]][[日本美術協会]]が設置する美術館として[[1972年]]（[[昭和]]47年）に[[フジサンケイグループ]]が開館した。<br />

公募展や、海外の美術館の所蔵品を借り受けての特別展などが随時開催されている。また、[[1983年]]（昭和58年）より[[上野の森美術館大賞展]]を、[[1994年]]（[[平成]]6年）より[[第一生命]]と共催で[[VOCA展]]を、毎年開催し、[[現代美術]]作家の育成に努めている。<br />

2008年に開催された「[[バガボンド#井上雄彦 最後のマンガ展|井上雄彦 最後のマンガ展]]」は入場制限付にもかかわらず上野の森美術館最高の人出を記録した。<br />

2009年には「聖地チベット ポタラ宮と天空の至宝」展を開催。中国政府による武力侵略・寺院略奪の結果収集された[[チベット]]の宗教美術品を展示している点や、中国政府の主張を元に作った歴史解説や作品解説をそのまま展示している点などを指し、上野の森美術館が中国政府のプロパガンダに加担しているという批判が起きた<br />
